Mary Gauthier's Wikipedia page (which she confirms in this interview speaks pretty accurately to her life and career) has plenty of bleak entries for her early life, but music helped turn that around. More than turn it around, she has come to be known as one of the best songwriters you're likely to hear.

She has a clear philosophy as a writer - you are dealing in valuable real estate, so make the most of what you put into your efforts. That has produced stunning songs, like Mercy Now.

There is a lighter side too though, as you'll hear when I ask her about a somewhat dubiously famous bed/room in Holland...
